Home renovations are exciting! Avoid these common mistakes to ensure that the final product is everything you dreamed of.
If you don’t take the time to talk with a designer and come up with a design for your home that you love, you will likely regret it. A great design takes into account your wants and needs, as well as how you use the space, and often paves the way for ideas you never would have thought of.
Do your due diligence by asking for referrals, reading reviews, and researching any potential contractor. Don’t just go with the guy who gives you the cheapest bid. Your home is too important for that.
No matter how in-depth your plan, there may be unforeseen situations that pop up. A contingency of 10% of your overall budget takes away the worry and stress and allows you to handle whatever arises.
Saving money is great…in the right circumstances. If you choose to use builder-grade materials for high-traffic areas, you’ll wish you hadn’t when you find yourself replacing things too soon.
While we all love having a stylish and trendy home, try to stick to classic styles in the areas that are hard to change (flooring, countertops, the floor plan) and use trends that you love in places you can update more easily (paint colors, lighting, the backsplash).
With the right contractor, some careful planning, a good design, and thoughtfully chosen selections, you can have the home of your dreams.
