Pool Materials Explained: Which Type is Best for Your In-Ground Pool?

A pool can be the centerpiece of your very own backyard resort, giving you a place to relax, spend time with loved ones, and even exercise. What type of pool would suit your family best? That depends on your goals. If your main desire is a place to relax, a pool with a sun shelf, hot tub, and even a swim-up bar might fit the bill. If family fun is the most important thing to you, you might want a large pool with a slide, a zero-entry area for little ones to play on, and some fun activities like a volleyball net or basketball hoop. If you have a view you want to highlight, an infinity pool with its vanishing edge might be best.

What Material is Best?
There are three main types of pool materials for in-ground pools, and each has its own pros and cons. Which one is best for you will depend on your priorities. Once you’re clear on what your pool’s main purpose is and you know what kinds of designs speak to you, you’ll be ready to decide on the materials.
Concrete
Also sometimes called gunite, a concrete pool is made of a mix of cement and sand. After the hole is excavated, a frame of rebar is built. Then the concrete is sprayed in place over the frame. An interior finish is used to make the concrete less permeable, and the three most commonly used options are plaster, aggregates, and tile.
- Plaster gives a classy and simple look and is generally the least expensive option. You can get it in pure white, making for a bright blue pool, or in a variety of colors. Plaster requires weekly cleaning and an acid wash every few years to keep it looking its best.
- Aggregate finishes contain small crystals or stones that are either left exposed (for a bumpy surface) or polished (for a smooth finish). This is a durable and visually appealing option that allows you to customize it to your own taste. Aggregate finishes resist pool chemicals better than plaster and tend to last longer without needing replacement.
- Tiles are usually glass and small–about 2 square inches or less. They come in a variety of colors and textures and can give your pool a sparkly, beachy vibe. They are usually regarded as the most durable option for concrete pools and are very popular.
The best feature of concrete pools is that they can be made in any shape and any size you want–since the excavated hole and frame determine the shape, you can have any design you can imagine. There is a lot of flexibility here–you can request steps, seats, and sunshelves. You can make your pool the traditional rectangle or use curved edges to give it interest and make it unique.
Concrete pools are very durable, but they do need maintenance. Because concrete is porous, it tends to absorb pool chemicals, requiring a little more work to keep the water at the right pH and chemical mix. It can also grow algae, meaning it may need more frequent cleaning.
Concrete is an expensive option–but you’re paying for increased flexibility in the size, shape, and design of your pool. If that’s important to you, you might be willing to spend a little more and do a little more maintenance to really get the pool of your dreams.
Vinyl
A vinyl pool is made of a thick plastic liner that is stretched over a frame. The walls of the pool are generally panels, and the floor is leveled sand or concrete. The top of the liner is secured into the rim around the pool, making a nice finish. While vinyl liners sometimes get a bad rap for being cheap, they’ve come a long way. Much sturdier than they used to be, they’re available in different designs and colors.
Vinyl pools have the lowest up-front costs of all pool types, and because of the smooth, non-porous surface, they are easy to keep clean (although they do need regular cleaning). Vinyl pools can be made in many shapes and sizes. Keep in mind that the more customization you do, the higher the cost will be.
The downside of vinyl is that the liner will need to be replaced eventually, usually in five to twelve years. If the pool is in direct sunlight or has damage from sharp items, it could be sooner. But overall, for a less-expensive yet still attractive option, vinyl can be a good choice.
Fiberglass
Fiberglass pools are different from the other options in that they are preformed and delivered to your home on the back of a truck. It’s placed into the excavated area with the help of a crane, making for a quick installation process.
Fiberglass pools are made of several layers of fiberglass reinforced with resin. This makes for a durable and low-maintenance shell with a non-porous surface. In terms of upkeep and longevity, fiberglass pools are the clear winner, requiring little maintenance and lasting as long as 30 years.
Because they come preformed, the shapes and sizes are limited. You won’t get a completely custom pool. But there are a lot of options available, including seats, tanning ledges, waterfall features, spillover spas, vanishing ledges, diving pools, lap pools, and combination spa/swimming pools.
While the initial investment will be higher than a vinyl pool, because there is less maintenance over the life of the pool, the long-term cost will likely be lower.
