Behr has just announced its 2026 Color of the Year, and it’s a stunning shift in the design conversation.
Meet Hidden Gem: a smoky jade that as Bher puts it, “embodies an air of mystery and sophistcation.”
For the past decade Millenial Grays and beiges reigned supreme, offering a safe, versatile canvas for interiors. But as design trens evolve, so do the colors that define them. We’ve entered the era of Millenial Green, where home owners are using various shades of green as a neutral. From exteriors, to built-in bookshelves and desks, to kitchen walls and cabinets, we’re seeing a movement toward grounding, nature inspired hues that still feel modern, elevated, and stylish.
Hidden Gem takes that evolution a step further. With its balance of blue and green, this shade nods to the calm reassurance of nature while embracing a fresh, contemporary sophistication.
“A hue that exudes quiet confidence,” Behr says, Whether used as an accent to create depth or enveloping a space with color drenching, this smoky jade creates a rich, dynamic look.”
The shift from gray to green isn’t just aesthetic, it’s emotional. “Now more than ever, there’s a growing appetite for colors that challenge convention and bring an unexpected sense of wonder to everyday spaces,” said Erika Woelfel, Vice President of Color and Creative Services at Behr Paint. “Hidden Gem captures that spirit in both name and color—its depth and refinement meets the desire for colors that are eternally stunning and stylish.”
After years of neutral backgrops, homeowners are craving color that feels alive, layered, and personal. Hidden Gem delivers, offering a hue that works as both a new neutral and a statement color.
Consumer research supports this change: 67% of homeowners surveyed by Behr said the color makes spaces feel unique, while 66% believe it “creates peace” and “stands the test of time”. This is a shade designed for the present moment, rooted in calm, yet ready to make an impact.
“Hidden Gem is a perfect choice for statement moments,” President of BOLT Builders Justin Olewack says. “I would use it on front doors, shutters, kitchen islands, and powder rooms where you want guest to pause and take notice. It’s bold without being loud.”
“Our team is seeing more clients embrace color drenching, and Hidden Gem nails the look”, explains our Production Manager Kevin McLister. “Painting walls, trim, and even ceilings in the same smoky jade creates a dramatic effect, without being overbearing. It works especially well in ding rooms, libraries, and homes offices.”
“From a design standpoint, Hidden Gem has amazing range,” says Suzette Conrad, Marketing Director. “Over the past couple years, we’ve seen homeowners move away from stark, plain walls and move towards warmer, cozier spaces with a vintage feel. Especially here in the DC area, where we have such a rich colonial history, and so many older homes in Federalist or Colonial styles, there’s been a renewed love for a vintage character. Dining rooms with pastoral wallpaper scenes are making a comeback, and I can easily see Hidden Gem as a stunning complement on the trim, ceiling, and wainscoting. We’ve also been designing custom built-ins in mudrooms, living rooms, and kitchens, and this color would be perfect for adding depth and sophistication without overwhelming the space.”
While the projects below are not ones we used with Hidden Gem, their similar hue and tone shows you what is possible to create a “quiet confidence” with Behr’s Color of the Year 2026
