We’re still soaking up the last sun-drenched days of summer, but fall is right around the corner. As the weather turns cooler, we pull out cozy blankets, and kids go back to school, our focus naturally turns more toward home. Many homeowners believe that spring or summer is the ideal time to start a home renovation project, but we have a different perspective: fall offers strategic advantages, the opportunity to prepare for the holidays, and often a smoother renovation process.
What could be better than spending the holiday season in your newly remodeled home? Whether you’re hosting a crowd or enjoying family time, a fresh kitchen, a comfortable living room, or a relaxing bathroom can make the holidays that much more enjoyable for you and your loved ones. Hosting in a refreshed space can be such a great feeling, and homeowners often want projects finished “before the holidays” —but that window closes quickly.
What you don’t want is to be right in the middle of a renovation when the holidays hit. It’s possible to host Thanksgiving or Christmas with an unfinished kitchen, partially complete bathroom, or living space under construction—but it’s not the best option. Planning for a renovation to be finished by the holidays means starting it now. That gives you a buffer for unexpected delays and means a lot less stress and pressure on you when it comes time to put up the tree.
Starting in early fall gives you a window of time to complete both the design and remodeling phases before guests arrive and seasonal celebrations begin. Many homeowners are surprised by how long a remodel takes. But when you consider everything that goes into a great remodel—coming up with a beautiful design plan, ordering materials, scheduling subcontractors, applying for permits, doing demolition, and finally the construction itself—you can see why you need to give yourself a few months to get the process done.
A kitchen remodel can take anywhere from 3-5 months, depending on the project scope.
A bathroom remodel is a similar timeline of 3-5 months.
A whole home remodel might take as much as 7-10 months.
Watch a short video for more on this topic.
Your best bet is to talk to a contractor now about your plans and see what a reasonable timeline looks like for you and your home. When you work with us on your DC, Virginia, or Maryland home, we give you a detailed schedule so you know what to expect. If a holiday remodel is what you’re after, let’s talk about that!
Spring and summer are peak seasons for many contractors and subcontractors. They stay busy…which means longer wait times for you. Early fall is traditionally a slower season, which can work to your advantage. Better availability means fewer scheduling conflicts, an easier time getting the materials you need, and quicker responses from your team. Starting your project now can mean a faster timeline as your contractor doesn’t have as many projects to manage. And sometimes you can get better pricing on labor and materials.
Doing a home remodel in the fall can give you more control over the timeline and process than doing it during the busy season. And that’s a good thing.
The weather in early fall in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia areas is often more predictable and milder than late fall, winter, and early spring. This means fewer weather-related delays. Contractors can work more consistently, especially on exterior projects like siding, windows, decks, or additions.
Early fall is also great weather-wise if you need to have your AC or heat shut off for a time. Your home will remain temperate and comfortable, and you’ll be glad it’s not July or January.
A remodel that is scheduled in the fall is generally completed before the end of the year. For some homeowners, this is helpful if they’re trying to use a home improvement budget before the end of the tax year. Sometimes there are tax credits or incentives that apply if improvements are made before year-end, or special loan rates or perks. And you may find that manufacturers sometimes offer seasonal discounts or clearance pricing in the fall to make room for new inventory.
A home remodel can be quite disruptive to your daily life at home. But in the fall, kids are back in school, and you establish a routine that can make doing a renovation easier. When kids are out of the house during the day, their lives are not as impacted by having people in and out of the house and having the noise and mess of construction. If you need to move out during the course of the remodel, having the kids in school during that time will give them a comforting sense of normalcy.
With fewer people at home during the day, construction can move faster and may feel less intrusive. When design meetings or trips to a showroom are needed, it can be easier to focus on decision-making without trying to fit these appointments around summer vacation plans or childcare needs.
Starting now—in early fall, before the holidays—means that your project won’t get caught in the backlog of spring remodels. When everyone else is getting ready to begin the design process, you will already be enjoying your new space (and if it’s an outdoor renovation, you’ll love having those spring days to soak up!) If your renovation has multiple phases, fall is a great time to knock out the exterior work so that when the weather turns cold, you’re ready to start on the inside. By beginning your home renovation now, you’ll enter the new year ahead of schedule, not behind it. New year, new space. What could be better?
